Austria

Location: Vienna, Austria

Travel Time: August 11, 2015

Our plane from Athens arrived early that morning in Vienna, Austria. The plan was to meet up later that evening with our friends in Bratislava, Slovakia. Since we had a few hours on our hands we decided to spend that time touring Vienna. The first thing on our to do list was to get our train tickets for Slovakia. The train station was very easy to navigate and the information booth helped us figure out how to get to the central train station. We then dropped off our bags in the subway locker and we were on our way. As we were walking, we stumbled upon the Unsere Garten (Our Garden) and saw some beautiful architecture. We kept walking and found ourselves at Hotel Sacher Wien. Of course, we had to take a break to try some delicious sachertorte. A sachertorte is a dense chocolate cake that has a thin layer of citrus jam and is coated with dark chocolate. Man, was it fantastic!

Since we knew our time was limited, we opted for the Big Bus tour of the city (http://eng.bigbustours.com/vienna/home.html). We figured that would be the easiest way to see all the major sites in a short period of time. The nice thing about Big Bus is that they have a ‘hop on/hop off’ policy. Meaning at any location you can hop off the bus to tour and then wait for the next bus to come around and hop back on. There were also headphones provided so you could listen to the audio recording of the tour in your language, ours being English. The bus took us past several Vienna landmarks including Vienna City Hall, Vienna State Opera and the Danube River.

About 3 hours later, it was time for us to hop off the Big Bus and get back to our train station. As always, we cut our time a little too short and ended up having to run to catch our train. We first had to take a metro where our bags where to the central train station in Vienna. Once we got off our first train, Tj ran to buy our tickets while Rico and I carried the bags (mostly Rico) to our train. We got on but Tj was nowhere to be found. I was afraid he wasn’t going to make it. The conductor blew the whistle and said ‘all aboard’ and at that very second, I saw Tj coming up the stairs. I yelled ‘RUN’ while Rico held the train doors open. All 3 of us were squished in the doorway, but we made it! Never a dull moment I guess. As why tried catching our breath, we sat down and relaxed for the next 45 minutes until we arrived in Bratislava.

We made it safely to Bratislava. Just in time to meet our friends for dinner.
